revisiting het romance webtoons

Hello I'm new to this website but I've decided to treat it as a blog! (that works, right?)

Over the holidays I had a bunch of longer media lined up to finally sit down and read, and so of course I instead re-installed the line webtoon app and read over 30 webtoons (ty Marley for recs!). I mainly wanted to read romance and fantasy and there seems to be a significant number of isekai/kingdom type series so I started there...and didn't branch out much because there's really a lot! Sweet, cheesy, dramatic, moving, and funny: there's a range to enjoy.

Here's a couple that stand out to me and the part that shines the most in each:

  • Happily Ever Afterwards: Reincarnated into her favourite book, Princess Peony is determined to chase after her favourite character from her previous life: secondary male lead Richt who was exiled to a northern province after leading a failed rebellion. Armed with insider knowledge of the warm heart under his icy façade, and impressive baking skills of her own, Peony is determined to thaw Richt's heart before her own ill-health ends her stay in snowy Stern.

Charm point: The art is oldschool gorgeous and coloured so softly, and the levity doesn't undercut the emotional beats in this at all!

  • Seasons of Blossom: Earnest stories of school romances and friendships, refreshing in the care and support shown by the characters to one another. Upon hearing about her friend Seonhui's crush on Jaemin, Bomi denies any interest in him and instead pretends that she has a crush on another classmate, the stoic Jinyeong who's always playing cell phone games. Crisis averted thanks to Bomi's pre-emptive moves! Or...Not?

Charm point: Handles the ease of day to day school life and heavier topics like suicide and bullying with the kind of lived-in importance that makes the stories come to life.

  • My In-Laws are Obsessed with Me: Haunted by the knowledge that her step mother is planning to kill her for her inheritance, Pereshati is determined to avoid her fate even if it means a contract marriage with the terrifying duke Lapileon. But when she stumbles onto a deadly family secret, things get messier than she could have ever imagined.

Charm point: There are a lot of cute webtoon kids but I daresay Celphius is! THE! CUTEST!!

  • From a Knight to a Lady: Once the morning star of Ersha, the knight Estelle is betrayed and killed by her closest friend only to awaken three years later in the body of Lucifela, a lady of the country that vanquished her own. Things are only worse when she's engaged to the war hero Zed, and finds out the traitor Khalid is not only alive but thriving in his new position. Estelle has to deal with the challenges of her current life all while chasing the unanswered questions from her former one.

Charm point: The art is gorgeous! The betrayal from a loved one (and so hurtfully you still question if it really happened) trope is so good! And I know I said these are het webtoons but...Florence and Lucifela could elope next chapter and I wouldn't be mad at all!

  • Like Wind on a Dry Branch: As the widow of a cruel count, Rieta is steps away from being buried alive at his funeral when the Archduke of Axias claims her in place of the debt owed to him by the count. What follows is a slow-paced story of living with grief, uncovering mysteries of the past and present, and opening hearts to love from unexpected sources.

Charm point: The dialogue stands out with its old-fashioned turns of phrase, and is sharp and witty enough to have me hissing through my teeth at certain scenes.

Killian asking Rieta for a blessing via forehead kiss

  • Your Throne: A fast-paced story of shifting alliances, hidden motives and secrets. Psyche and Medea are two girls that could not be more unlike, both vying for the position of crown princess. While Medea is cunning and dangerous, her betrothal was cancelled in favour of the angelic Psyche who has the heart of the crown prince. What will happen when, through a twist of fate, their bodies are swapped?

Charm point: Every new chapter is COMPLETELY unpredictable, but sure to be presented most dramatically!

It's been fun getting reacquainted with the webtoon layout--Vertical scroll and sparse panels--And all the excitement of weekly serialized and translated fiction. Less fun figuring out all the payment models, but I think I understand daily passes and coins now!
